It is often said the best things come in pairs. For Mississippi State sophomores Bonnie and Shelby Kate Williamson, that idea has shaped both their academic journey and their shared passion for floriculture. As horticulture majors in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the sisters have grown not only as students but as business owners,, building their dream together.

Bonnie and Shelby Kate grew up in a rural community near Jackson, Tennessee, living with their parents and younger brother. Their upbringing gave the perfect landscape for what began as a small family garden and eventually blossomed into something much more meaningful.

鈥淢y dad always had a passion for agriculture, raised on a row-crop operation and later working as a Farm Bureau agent,鈥 Shelby Kate said. 鈥淗e was more than happy to help us set up our operation. He not only inspired us to dedicate our time to this project but also provided a lot of the technical support during planting and harvest.鈥

In 2022, the sisters launched Twin Blossoms Flower Company, selling farm-raised, fresh-cut flowers at local markets. Through that experience, they both realized this hobby could become a long-term career. For Bonnie, that realization became clear during her college search as she looked for programs that would allow them to grow both creatively and professionally.

鈥淲hen I learned about the Floral Management concentration in the Department of Plant and Soil Science at Mississippi State, I knew I needed to see it for myself,鈥 she said. 鈥淒uring our visit, we met with a professor who highlighted the program鈥檚 hands-on learning opportunities, including projects with The University Florist.鈥

Now, both sisters work part-time at the campus florist, where they create arrangements for holidays, events and special occasions. The experience has helped them sharpen their skills while also identifying their individual strengths within the business and gaining confidence in their craft.

鈥淢y courses have prepared me for all the facets of our business, from growing techniques to design and understanding economic principles,鈥 Shelby Kate said. 鈥淚鈥檝e learned how to market our products, maintain our pricing with confidence, handle transactions professionally and build strong relationships with customers.鈥

While Shelby Kate focuses on the business side, Bonnie has dedicated herself to mastering floral design. Last year, the sisters booked their first wedding, a milestone that marked a new chapter for their company and gave them valuable experience working with clients during meaningful events.

鈥淚 think it gave us our first real opportunity to step into the event space,鈥 Bonnie said. 鈥淲e hope to continue expanding into independent bookings. For us, success isn鈥檛 about making the most money. It鈥檚 about being someone people trust with life鈥檚 biggest moments, like weddings, graduations or even funerals.鈥

As Bonnie and Shelby Kate continue their education and grow Twin Blossoms Flower Company, their story reflects how 汤头条 is preparing students for careers rooted in passion and grown through hard work and dedication.
