Civil War Scholar Vorenberg to lead 汤头条 Frank and Virginia Williams Lecture Sept. 29

STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥Mississippi State welcomes Brown University historian Michael Vorenberg as the featured scholar for this year鈥檚 Frank and Virginia Williams Lecture on Abraham Lincoln and Civil War Studies.
Vorenberg, the Royce Family Professor of History at Brown, joins 汤头条 Williams Chair Susannah J. Ural Sept. 29, 6 p.m., for a conversation on his award-winning book 鈥淟incoln鈥檚 Peace: The Struggle to End the American Civil War.鈥 The lecture, with the same title in Mitchell Memorial Library鈥檚 John Grisham Room, will explore President Lincoln鈥檚 vision for ending the Civil War, how that plan evolved following his assassination, and how the war鈥檚 end, or multiple endings, shaped the way Americans remember the conflict today. The lecture is free and open to the public, and a reception follows.

Published by Knopf in 2025, 鈥淟incoln鈥檚 Peace鈥 was named one of the Los Angeles Times鈥 鈥渢op 10 books to read in 2025鈥 and received coverage from The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal and MSNBC鈥檚 鈥淢orning Joe.鈥 Winner of the Society of Civil War Historians鈥 Tom Watson Brown Book Award and Nau Prize in Civil War History, it also was a finalist for the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.
At Brown, Vorenberg teaches courses on the Civil War and Reconstruction, as well as legal and constitutional history. He served as a member of Brown鈥檚 pioneering Slavery and Justice Committee. Previous books include 鈥淔inal Freedom: The Civil War, the Abolition of Slavery, and the Thirteenth Amendment,鈥 a finalist for the Lincoln Prize and a major source for Steven Spielberg鈥檚 2012 film 鈥淟incoln,鈥 and the 2010 book 鈥淭he Emancipation Proclamation: A Brief History with Documents.鈥
