STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擬ississippi State鈥檚 Liza Bondurant is among 46 nationwide recipients of Mathematical Association of America Outreach grants helping fund math outreach efforts across the U.S. and its territories this year.

An associate professor of secondary mathematics education, Bondurant is receiving a $6,000 grant funded by the MAA and Tensor Foundation for her project 鈥淐REATE Math鈥擟ultivating Rehumanized Embodied Approaches To Education.鈥 The initiative will facilitate mentoring relationships between female 汤头条 pre-service math teachers and local female math teachers while providing professional learning opportunities focused on embodied approaches to math education.
鈥淚 am confident that this grant will have a positive impact on mathematics teaching and learning at Mississippi State and in the Starkville Oktibbeha School District,鈥 Bondurant said. 鈥淓mbodied approaches involve using materials and body movement to aid in the teaching and learning of mathematics. This approach is effective because it helps make abstract math concepts tangible by grounding them in concrete experiences.鈥
During the 2025-26 academic year, participants will learn about teaching methods based on embodied cognition and will plan lessons, receive materials and implement activities based on what they learn. The grant funding will support teacher stipends, continuing education and classroom materials.
Local female math teachers and 汤头条 female pre-service math teachers interested in participating may contact Bondurant at lbondurant@colled.msstate.edu for more information.
The Mathematical Association of America is funding through the support of its benefactors, including the Tensor Foundation, Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation and the John and Mary Neff Foundation. The Tensor Women and Mathematics grants support projects, including Bondurant鈥檚, that encourage female university and pre-college students to continue in their mathematical studies.
